How Obscure Can You Get?

Do you have a favorite game that us totally obscure? That one game you spent hours playing that leaves your friends scratching there heads when you call out its title? I have to think no matter what the platform is we all have a game like that. Probably one my all time favorites was actually on the Commodore 64. It was an Activision title called Park Patrol. Let me guess you never heard of it. My Mom bought this home for me one day after "bargin hunting" at a local store that carried games. At first I wasn't to receptive, but after playing it for a while it became a favorite.  Park Patrol was a cartridge game for the C64. On my SX-64 the cartidge slot was under a trap door on top, I liked cartridge games on this system because they where as easy to use as a cartidge on a Atari and loaded up right away. A Bit of an Issue

My son asks, “Hey Dad, why is it called the Nintendo 64?” To which I reply ,  “Because it came out in 1964!” being a smart ass . At first he accepts this answer but about 5 seconds later he bounces back with, “No it didn’t,  what’s  the real reason?” Essentially ,  this  line of questioning  open ed   a door on  comput er  and video game history  that w ould take  a great deal of explaining .  T o be honest u nless you lived back then th e whole 64 -bit  thing is lost on you,  a fter all we  live  in a  world of   where  consoles  “ bits ”  no  l onger matter This is the era of  the  PS4, and XBOX One, not the XBOX 512 or the  PlayStation  512.  Now days it’s more about what  the  console can do besides playing video games ,  rather they how they play or look.   So how do you explain the relevance of the   ” 64 ”   in Ninten...

Defining 8-bit: Part 1 - A Journey into Nostalgia and Perception

About a two years ago I was having a conversation with a hardcore Atari 2600 fan   regarding a particular game we both liked, that had both an Atari 2600 port and an NES port. In the conversation I had made some comment about how that particular Atari 2600 game was good but looked better in 8-bit alá the NES. As I said that he stopped to correct me (very nicely I might add) saying that although he knew what I meant about 8-bit and the NES, that Atari 2600 games where technically 8-bit too. At first I was taken a bit back by that though,  I knew that Atari had programmed many of their games using 8-bit computers like their own Atari 400 and 800, but I never made the direct connection to Atari 2600 games being 8-bit. In my mind when comparing the offerings of the Atari 2600, to the NES it was easy to lose sight of the fact that the 2600 was 8-bit too.
